IT Asset Disposal · South Africa and across Africa

Retire IT equipment without retiring your data, your value, or your compliance.

When you upgrade, the hardware that leaves the building still carries private employee information, customer records, financial files and your brand reputation. Universe Direct collects, audits, sanitises, refurbishes, resells or recycles that equipment — with a documented chain of custody from the moment it leaves your site.

What ITAD actually is

IT asset disposition is the controlled process of taking retired computers, laptops, servers, storage and network equipment out of your environment — securely, compliantly, and with as much residual value recovered as possible. It is not the same as calling a scrap dealer. Proper ITAD covers inventory, chain of custody, data sanitisation or physical destruction, remarketing or donation, and certified recycling of anything that cannot be reused. In fact, in most cases a well-managed ITAD return is a payment to your corporation (net of any services) and the peace of mind of indemnity against risk.At Universe Direct we treat disposition as the first mile of the same lifecycle: ITAD, Buying, Reconditioning, Renting and Reselling business-grade IT.

Why ITAD matters

Environmental duty

South Africa generates thousands of tonnes of e-waste a year. Dumping it is illegal and reckless. We refurbish first, reuse second and recycle last — in line with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 and eWASA best practice.

Money still sitting in the storeroom

Written-off does not mean worthless. Depending on age and condition, equipment can be bought back, sold to staff, donated with support, or broken for certified recycling. Acting early usually recovers more than waiting.

Data and brand risk

Every retired HDD, SSD and memory module can still hold fragments of customer data, payroll, contracts or internal mail. Without a verified wipe or destruction, that device is a breach waiting to happen — and a POPIA problem you cannot unwind after the fact.

Compliance you can show

POPIA requires responsible handling of personal information for as long as you control it. We sanitise media to recognised international standards and issue certificates so audit, legal and risk teams have a paper trail, not a promise.

Our ITAD services

Costs are quoted per job. Volumes, models, locations and the mix of reuse versus recycle all change the commercial picture, so we do not publish a rate card. Request a consultation and we will send a tailor-made quote.

01

We buy your old IT assets

Retired business PCs and laptops still have a second life. Office users run Windows and Microsoft Office on reconditioned machines with no practical difference from new hardware; first-time home users get an affordable way onto the internet. We restore viable units to working condition and pay you the residual value, less the cost of refurbishment.

02

We dispose of assets that cannot be reused

Where equipment is end-of-life, we collect it and dispose of it in accordance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 and eWASA best practice. The aim is simple: keep hazardous materials out of landfill and send fractions into legitimate recycling streams. Recycled e-waste is certified and tracked by tag number.

03

We sanitise your data

Before any device is reused or recycled, data must be unrecoverable. That is a POPIA requirement, not a nice-to-have. We overwrite HDDs and SSDs using software and firmware methods aligned to US NIST SP 800-88.
• Zeros and Random — software overwrites of all sectors visible to the operating system. NIST 800-88 Clear.
• Secure Erase (SE) and Enhanced Secure Erase (ESE) — firmware methods that overwrite the full surface, including hidden areas and spare sectors. NIST 800-88 Purge.

04

We help you empower staff

New PCs are out of reach for many employees. We can refurbish your retired fleet and sell units to staff at a modest fee for home use. Universe Direct handles the sales process, payment administration if required, and the warranty and support on those machines.

05

We donate assets to the charity you choose

Donating computers is a good intention that often becomes an operational headache. We take on refurbishment, tracking, administration, set-up and support so the gesture actually lands — and so no uncleansed drive ever leaves your control.

06

Audit report and condition report

If you are not sure what is in the storeroom or still on the floor, we produce a complete audit: asset tags, model numbers and quantities. The condition report adds specifications and condition against each item
— the document finance and procurement need before a buy-back or refresh decision.

How the process works

Every collection follows a chain of custody. Nothing moves without a record.

  1. Consult and scope. You tell us sites, volumes, asset types and whether you want buy-back, staff sale, donation, recycle — or a mix. We quote.
  2. Collect under control. Secure logistics from your premises. We can palletise, shrink-wrap and freight when needed, and we handle collections across South Africa and into the wider region.
  3. Audit on arrival. Every unit is logged — tags, models, quantities, and condition where required.
  4. Sanitise or destroy. Drives are wiped to the agreed NIST 800-88 level or physically destroyed if they cannot be erased. Certificates follow.
  5. Refurbish, remarket or recycle. Viable equipment is reconditioned for resale; staff purchase or donation. The rest is recycled and tracked by tag number.
  6. Report back. You receive the audit, sanitisation / destruction certificates and, where applicable, e-waste compliance certificates and a settlement for recovered value.

Financial recovery

Retired IT does not have to be a sunk cost. Depending on age and condition we can:

Buy-back

Offer a fair-market valuation and pay residual value after refurbishment costs.

Staff programme

Employees get a reliable home PC and you close the asset out cleanly.

Charity channel

Usable units go to a charity of your choice, with the admin and support handled.

Act early

Equipment left in a storeroom loses value every quarter, while the compliance risk stays exactly the same.

A partner you can put in front of audit

Universe Direct started in 1997. We are Africa’s largest IT refurbisher, operating from a 2 000 m² facility in Westlake Business Park, Cape Town, and we support collections and services across South Africa and into Southern and East Africa.

ITAD is not a side desk. It is the inbound half of the same operation that already reconditions and supplies business-grade laptops, desktops, servers and parts to corporates, education, resellers and the public.

Clients and counterparties include Dell Financial Services, Absa, British American Tobacco, Old Mutual, PwC, ENS, the National Prosecuting Authority, Rand Merchant Bank, Investec, Sanlam, VISA, Ernst & Young, CPUT, Stellenbosch University and the University of the Western Cape.

Frequently asked questions

Is this POPIA-compliant?

We sanitise or destroy storage media before reuse or recycling, keep a chain of custody, and issue certificates. That is the operational backbone POPIA expects when you release devices that once held personal information. We are not your Information Officer and this page is not legal advice — your own policy still governs classification and retention.

Our published methods follow NIST SP 800-88 Clear and Purge. That is the current international reference most auditors recognise. If a contract still specifies an older multi-pass overwrite (including DoD 5220.22-M style passes), say so at quoting stage and we will confirm what we can run.

Failed media is securely destroyed rather than remarketed. You still receive the destruction record.

Yes. We arrange logistics nationally and into the region. Cape Town collections can often ride with our existing delivery fleet.

No. Mix of models, working versus scrap, data requirements and collection points vary too widely. The consultation and quote are free.

Yes. That programme is built for organisations that want a social benefit without running a second-hand IT shop internally.

Talk to us about servers, storage, networking and mixed lots. If we cannot remarket an item we can still put it through the audited recycle path.

Request a free consultation

Tell us what you need to retire, where it sits, and whether you care more about value recovery, staff access, a charity donation or a clean recycle. We will propose a date that works and send a quote built around that job — not a generic package.
